Saltdean Lido Restoration

Located just outside the city of Brighton and Hove, the grade II listed Saltdean lido originally built in the 1930’s had fallen into disrepair. Known for its historical and architectural importance Aqua Platinum were keen to restore the Lido to its former glory by undergoing an extensive improvement and renovation.

Innovative Swimming Pool Design

Popular with the residents of Brighton, this favoured location is perfect for sunny days being described as ‘the kind of place you expect on holiday abroad’. The south-east facing pool is widely admired for its innovative design, which gave the swimmers the impression of being on a cruise liner.

As the main swimming pool builders for the project our task involved swimming pool rendering, rebuilding of the main 40m heated swimming pool, complete with a fully automatic slatted cover. In addition, the children’s pool was also renovated with jumping jets, water features and a water slide.

The first restoration project of its kind for Aqua Platinum

Aqua Platinum Projects were on site for 18 months and the project was a first for the company as our previous work was mainly private residential clients.

Hearing from our commercial manager Dominic:

“It was a departure for us from our work previously, but also an opportunity to engage with the community and try something new. Most of our work in the past has been with Tier 1 contractors and there’s been loads of red tape. With this we were in total control but also had a great relationship with the community and included them in the process.”

The challenge was to keep the Grade II* listed art deco design while updating the facilities. Treatment and movement of water was also a technical issue that needed to be overcome. Phase one was completed earlier this year, and the pool opened over the summer season.

“It has been an honour and privilege to be involved in the restoration of such a historic lido, bringing new life to this superb Grade II* listed art deco design some 70 years since it was designed. We have worked hard together with the local residents to design amenities which meet the needs and can be enjoyed by all members of the community.”

The second phase of the project looks to see the Grade II* listed lido building restored, which first opened in 1938. The Saltdean community continue to raise money to fund the restoration of the Saltdean Lido.
